This week, Sabail District Court  heard the cases of  Musavat Party members Arif Hajili, Tural Abbasli, APFP activists Mahammad Majidli,  Sahib Karimov, Arif Alishli, Babek Hasanov, Zulfugar Eyvazli, Musavat activist Elshan Hasanov, and non-affiliated Elnur Israfilov.  Shamkir City Court heard the case of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party Board member Shahin Hasanli and Sumgayit court heard the case of youth activist Jabbar Savalanli.

Sabail District Court issued decision to extend pre-trial detention of Arif Hajili, Tural Abbasli , Mahammad Majidli for another two months. The judge scheduled the next hearings on the case of six opposition activists for 19 June.

On July 14th, Baku Court of Grave Crimes  held a preliminary hearing on the case of Azerbaijan Islamic Party Head Movsum Samadov’s case. The judge did not grant motions filed by lawyers in the hearing.  The judge scheduled the next hearing for 21 July.

A two-day OSCE meeting on promotion of pluralism in new media was held in Vienna on 7-8 July, 2011. The meeting was co-organized by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunya Miyatovich.   In the first day of conference, new media problems and chances in the promotion of pluralism was discussed. Azerbaijan was represented in the event by IRFS Director Emin Huseynov and Radio Liberty correspondent Khadija Ismayilova.

Public Chamber held a public discussion at Musavat Party office on July 13 on the situation in Azerbaijani prisons. It was noted in the event that legal reforms are nothing but a show, and the prison conditions do not meet modern requirements.

Former political prisoner Eynulla Fatullayev spoke about the situation in local prisons and described it as painful. According to him, a reliable monitoring mechanism should be created to improve the present situation in prisons.

Presentation of the report  on comparative analysis of the visa regime   in Azerbaijan with  the countries of "Eastern Partnership" took place  in Media Center. The document has been drawn up by Alovsat Aliyev, the head of the Azerbaijan Migration Centre. Aliyev believes that in order to simplify visa regime with EU it is necessary to provide security of Azerbaijan’s borders, to improve management in this area, to regulate migration, and to sign the readmission agreement.

A public discussion was held in the Caucasian Moslems’ Office on the local wedding and mourning ceremonies. The head of Caucasian Moslems’ Office Sheikhulislam Allahshukur Pashazadeh says that the wedding and mourning ceremonies is accompanied by mass expenses, which is a source of concern for the population. The speakers criticizes the waste of funds in both wedding and mourning ceremonies and saught support from the society and media representatives, as well as local intellectuals.
