The trial of human rights defender Vidadi Isgandarov is continuing at Goychay Regional Court.  Judge Elkhan Suleymanov presided over the hearing. Isgandarov, his lawyer Khalid Bagirov, media representatives, and civil society representatives were in attendance.

The hearing opened with a speech by Isgandarov, in which he stated that he opposes the charges brought against him. He criticized the judge for failing to bring 5 of the 11 alleged victims to the hearing.

Lawyer Khalid Bagirov filed a motion asking for the court to allow the trial to be filmed; to familiarize the court with the protocols of 11 court hearings; and to replace pre-trial detention with a house arrest. Public prosecutor Nariman Alakbarov requested the court to deny the motions. The judge rejected the motions.

Bagirov requested the judge to ensure that media reports on court hearings are noted in the protocol; the judge again denied the motion.

APFP member Shahverdi Mikayilov and Musavat party member Alirasim Alimammadli testified to the fraudulent activity in the elections, and presented evidence. According to their statement, the MP from New Azerbaijan Party Shamsaddin Hajiyev was elected through a fraudulent process. “Vidadi Isgandarov won the elections, but Shamsaddin Hajiyev was given the seat.”

The hearing continued with witnesses testimonies for the defendant side. The Judge did not hear witness Samir Abbasli`s testimony. Mehman Asgarov said that he, not Vidadi Isganderov as alleged in the charges, prepared the ballot papers during the election.

Victim Ilyas Huseynov gave testimony in favor of Isgandarov. Witness Elman Ibrahimov stated that Isgandarov did not, as claimed, violate the voting rights of Alinizam Jafarov. He said that charges brought against Isganderov are false.

The next hearing has been scheduled for August 17th.
