The “Clean World” Public Union to Support Women held an event at the Media Center to discuss the murders committed in the framework of domestic violence, and the physical and psychological threats to young children growing up in violent situations.
Union head Mehriban Zeynalova said that both domestic violence in Azerbaijan and suicide rates among women are soaring. She raised the need for urgent measure to deal with the causes of domestic violence. “107 people died as a result of domestic violence this year. 53 were women, 48 were men, and 6 were children. 54 women committed suicide after enduring domestic violence and psychological abuse.”
According to her, the lack of proper investigation into the causes of the suicides causes the situation to further deteriorate. It is the children who bear the brunt of the psychological and physical damage in the aftermath.
The speakers noted that there is a real need in Azerbaijan to create rehabilitation centers and to better cooperate with police, in order to advance the fight against domestic violence.
The event went on to discuss the implementation of awareness raising measures among women regarding going to police in cases of violence. Free legal assistance for abused women was also discussed.
