Today the Feminist Women’s Movement held a presentation to launch the new initiative at the International Press Center.
Sevinj Mammadova, one of the co-founders, said that the motivation for establishing the group is to address the various problems faced by Azerbaijani women in the country. Women do not have the same opportunities as men in terms of participation in the social life of the country. Domestic violence remains a problem, and women lack adequate legal support. Before the launch of this movement, there was no single organization to tackle the full range of the problems faced by women across the country.
Asima Nasirli, another of the co-founders, drew attention to the male dominance in the legislative, executive and judiciary branches of the government. In some regional governmental organizations men even hold the positions that were originally designed for women. According to Nasirli, it is a violation of women’s rights that they are not fairly represented in the police, prosecutor’s office, and customs and tax offices.
The leaders of the movement expressed their hope for the resolution of these various issues through cooperation with international, local governmental and non-governmental organizations.
