Pure World public union presented the results of its survey on the role of women in the police force, titled "Let's break down stereotypes -myths about female police officers".
According to the head of the NGO, Mehriban Zeynalova, the reason for raising this issue is the continued problem of domestic violence against women. Increasing the number of female police officers, believes the NGO, may help to combat this problem. Victims of domestic violence, who appeal to the police, are often ignored by male officers.
The NGO conducted an opinion poll on women in the police, canvassing 300 people, half men, half women. Raising the number of female officers was welcomed by some as a means of increasing levels of female employment, but others were skeptical about women's ability to work successfully in such a male-dominated professional environment.
Many agreed, however, that it would be valuable to have teams of female police officers working to combat the specific issues of domestic violence and human trafficking.
