"The health of Orkhan Karimov, former deputy chief of the Finance Department of the Ministry of Education, has seriously deteriorated. His coronary arteries have seriously contracted, which may result in death", his lawyer Ramiz Mammadov reported during the press conference held in the IRFS.
He noted that Karimov had a heart operation in 2009 and that he suffers from ischemia and stenocardia, and needs stationary treatment. The medical examination carried out while Karimov was in prison, confirmed his disease.
According to the lawyer, his client cannot be kept in closed environment. But despite of it, he is being held in Baku investigative prison. The numerous appeals for the replacement of his pre-trial detention sentence have been denied.
Orkhan Karimov was detained on June 6th 2011 by the employees of the ministry of national security, and was charged under article 308 (abuse of power) and article 311 (reception of bribes).
According to the investigation, Karimov had received bribes for fraudulent placement of students in higher educations institutions, and the total amount of the bribe he received is 116 000 AZN.
But lawyer Ramiz Mammadov rejects these charges, stating that his client is innocent.
Orkhan Karimov was arrested following the testimony by two brothers - Rafig and Ramiz Huseynovs, who had received bribes from students and introduced themselves as Orkhan Karimov. At the confrontation the brothers admitted that they had been forced to give that false testimony, bur did not name the person who had forced them to do so. But the investigation ignored this fact. Currently Karimov's case is being considered by Baku Grave Crimes Court.
"I will fight until my son is released. He is not guilty, I know it for sure. He is 43, and he is seriously sick. Help me to save my son" said Karimov's mother Elza Karimova.
Orkhan Karimov is the son of late poet Ali Karim.
