Select Category:
Elmar Huseynov, chief editor of the Monitor magazine who was murdered by a hired gunman in 2005, would have turned 47 if he were still alive. His memory was honored today by journalists and human rights defenders, who laid flowers on his grave and spoke about the freedom of expression and Elmar's contribution to the cause of free citizen journalism. "Elmar’s killers vainly hoped that with his death the freedom of expression in Azerbaijan will cease to exist. Conversely, every birthday of Elmar, on the days of international solidarity of the press and the days of the national press, civil society expresses its consolidation here at his grave," said Azadlig newspaper commentator Rovshan Hajibeyli. The head of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety, Emin Huseynov said that the founders of the Elmar Huseynov Foundation decided to secure the return of the Fund's documents seized by the tax authorities and resume its activities. Sabir Huseynov, Elmar’s father thanked everyone for their attention to memory of his son and expressed hope that the killer of Elmar will stand trial. Elmar Huseynov was known for his principled citizenship and tough and uncompromising criticism of the country's administration. The executors of his murder have not been found yet, although the investigation team of the Turkish secret services in hot pursuit established the names of the killers and provided this information to the senior management. The authorities suggested their own version of the murder, according to which, the killers are Georgian citizens of Azerbaijani origin. However, for unclear reasons, no one arrests them. .
