RESIDENTS OF SOVIET STREET DEMAND FAIR COMPENSATION FOR THEIR HOUSES
Select Category:
More than five thousand residents of former Soviet (current Narimanov) and neighborhood streets in Baku, who are unhappy with the compensation offered for demolition of their houses, held a protest in front of the School # 173 on February 16. The fixed amount of compensation is 1,500 manat per one square meter of apartment. The deputy governor of Yasamal district, Samad Islamov talked to the protestors giving some promises. He tried to pacify the people, assuring that no one would be forcibly evicted. The citizens claim that the amount of fair compensation should be twice as much as the offered rate. They also demand reasonable compensation and a resettlement which is consistent with the law and does not violate anyone's rights. The dwellers from neighborhood complained that Ulvi Guliyev, the MP from their constituency, does not support them or defend their property rights. Seeing the increase in the number of protestors, the police tried to appease more angry ones. The protest of Soviet Street resident lasted for 2 hours, with an announcement in the end that the authorities have one week to consider their demands, or another protest will be organized. Note that, 10 thousand houses in the fore-mentioned area are planned to be demolished to pay the way for construction of a park according to the master plan of the city.
