On May 26, Baku Court on Grave Crimes chaired by Judge Rauf Aliyev announced verdict on the case of Anar Mammadli, chairman of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center (EMDS), Bashir Suleymanli, executive director of the organization, and Elnur Mammadov, head of the Volunteers International Cooperation Public Union. The court handed down 5.5 and 3.5 years of prison sentences to Mammadli and Suleymanli, and a 3.5-year conditional sentence to Mammadov. Court made a decision about arresting Bashir Suleymanli from the court room, as well. The hearing started with speeches by the defendants' lawyers. Mammadli's lawyer Elchin Sadigov said that the criminal case itself was opened illegally, as the Serious Crimes Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General's Office does not have the right to start a criminal case on tax offences. Elnur Mammadov's lawyer Javad Javadli, Anar Mammadli's other lawyer Irada Javadova and Bashir Suleymanli's lawyer Alibaba Rzayev noted that the remarks on non-payment of VAT are unfounded, which is referred to as the reason for opening the criminal case in question. They stated that grants are exempt from VAT in accordance with Azerbaijani legislation and intergovernmental agreement with the U.S. Then the accused were given opportunity to speak. Anar Mammadli noted that the lawsuit was instituted to punish civil activism and independent monitoring of elections. He further stated that the organization conducting monitoring of elections since 2001 could not simply be a criminal organization, as the investigation tries to portray it. Suleymanli and Mammadov also denied the charges, and called on the court to make an acquittal verdict. Note that Anar Mammadli was detained on 16 December 2013, on charges of running business without registration, tax evasion and abuse of office by influencing election results. He was sent to pretrial detention straight away, while the two other accused, EMDS executive director Bashir Suleymanli and Volunteers International Cooperation public union director Elnur Mammadov were prohibited to leave Baku until trial. On March 19, the accused faced additional charges of service forgery and appropriation of property. On May 26, "D-18" Youth Public Union held a presentation of "Loyalty to the ideals of Republic" award at the press center of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety. According to the results of the survey conducted by the public union, the award was bestowed to the imprisoned leader of REAL Ilgar Mammadov. The award was presented to the executive director of the movement, Natig Jafarli, on behalf of Mammadov. On May 27, a group of female employees made redundant from AzeriGas Production Association held a press conference. According to them, the redundancy affected not only the gas producing areas in Baku, but all of such areas across the country, and as a result 900 female employees have lost their job. Only female staff is cut. Female employees assessed this move as arbitrariness, neglect of the Labor Code and discrimination. Though they've appealed to the Presidential Administration and Ombudswoman, there has been no reaction. On May 27, Baku Court on Grave Crimes chaired by Judge Ahmad Guliyev announced the verdict on the case of Facebook activist Abdul Abilov. Court gave 5.5 years of prison sentence to Abilov. Note that Facebook activist Abdul Abilov was arrested on 22 November 2013 and charged with illegal possession, storage, manufacturing or sale of drugs which stipulates a prison sentence for up to twelve years. Narimanov district court ordered him to be put in pretrial custody. Abilov was the admin of the Facebook page "Stop sycophants!" which was closed after his arrest. On May 27, businessman Elshad Mammadov was received at the Presidential Administration. Mammadov noted that he informed Administration about the problem he had faced. A meeting was reserved for him with Fuad Alasgarov, the head of the Department on Work with Law-Enforcement Agencies. Note that Elshad Mammadov a few years ago bought 2 apartments by paying 355 000 AZN to Hasan-6 construction company, which belongs to Avesta trust owned by Ibrahim Ibrahimov. He stitched his lips in his rented apartment in Gazakh region as a sign of protest.
