On July 14, Nizami district court of Ganja city completed trial in the case of Hasan Huseynli, human rights activist and director of the Ganja-based Intelligent Citizen Enlightenment Center. The court returned a verdict of guilty for Huseynli which sentenced him to six years in prison, one year less than that requested by the prosecutor. He was arrested in the courtroom. Huseynli was detained on March 31, for purportedly stabbing his neighbor Arzu Gahramanov. He was convicted of armed hooliganism and illegal possession of cold weapons. On July 14, Baku Court of Appeal held a hearing on the appeal filed by imprisoned journalist and human rights defender Parviz Hashimli. Hashimli's defense team intend to file a cassation appeal against the preliminary hearing held on July 7, over the judge's decision to consider the appeal without judicial investigation. Hashimli is appealing his 8-year prison sentence levied on charges of smuggling and illegal possession of fire arms. On July 14, Baku resident Arif Rustamov held a press conference at the press room of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety, over the impunity enjoyed by those who had assaulted his family 5 years ago. Rustam Rustamov and Parvaz Rustamov were not arrested after inflicting severe injuries on his family members 5 years ago. A year and a half ago the court sentenced Rustam to three years in prison, while Parvaz got a 4-year suspended sentence. However Rustam was not actually sent to jail. According to Arif Rustamov, the case over the assault on his family is now under consideration of the Supreme Court. Arif Rustamov has also appealed to the president Ilham Aliyev requesting a change in the panel of judges that will consider the case. On July 15, Nasimi district court extended the detention of journalist Rauf Mirgadirov for another four months. According to the journalist's lawyer Elmar Suleymanov, extension was made based on the motion of the General Prosecutor's Office. Suleymanov said they would appeal the decision. Mirkadirov, Ankara-based journalist for Azerbaijan's Russian-language newspaper Zerkalo, was arrested on April 19 on charge of treason (espionage) under Article 274 of Azerbaijan's criminal code. On July 16, the house of culture of the settlement Amirjan on the outskirts of Baku hosted a solemn assembly of several hundred members and supporters of Azerbaijan Popular Front devoted to the 25th anniversary of this organization. The meeting was opened by the leader of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP) Ali Karimli, who made a speech about the priorities and values for which APFP fights. Presentations were made by civil society activists, core members of the party, Jamil Hasanli, Leyla Yunus, Vidadi Mirkamal, Sardar Jalaloglu, Ibrahim Ibrahimli and others, who recalling the history of the movement gave an assessment of its various stages. On July 17 a group of journalists and human rights defenders honored the memory of the Monitor magazine's late chief editor Elmar Huseynov who was murdered on March 2, 2005, by laying flowers on his grave. The head of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety, Emin Huseynov said that the founders of the Elmar Huseynov Foundation decided to secure the return of the Fund's documents seized by the tax authorities and resume its activities. Elmar Huseynov was known for his principled citizenship and tough and uncompromising criticism of the country's administration. The executors of his murder have not been found up until today. The authorities suggest that Elmar's killers are Georgian citizens of Azerbaijani origin. However, for unclear reasons, no one arrests them. The committee defending the rights of Azerbaijani citizens Dilgam Asgarov, Shahbaz Guliyev and Hasan Hasanov, who were recently captured by Armenians in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, held a press conference at the International Press Center on July 17. Chairman of the Defense Committee, journalist Elkhan Salahov said that their aim was to defend the rights of the captives and to inform the world community about the violence committed against them. The Defence Committee has already appealed to the delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Azerbaijan, the OSCE Minsk Group, United Nations and other international organizations. Addressing the event, MP from Yeni Azerbaijan Party, Aydin Mirzezade said this act of Armenians was incompatible with international law. He called on international organizations and OSCE to react to this issue. The event was interrupted halfway through by the power cut. Organizers left the room hastily without even reading their statement. They only said that they will try to hold another event in coming days.
