June 24 is the birthday of Abulfaz Elchibay, the late leader of Azerbaijan's Popular Movement. On this occasion, Elchibay's companions, his followers, intellectuals, public figures and party leaders gathered in front of the his grave in the Alley of Honor. He was commemorated, the difficult political path he had gone through was recalled and the importance of realization of his ideas was emphasized. Abulfaz Elchibay (Aliyev) was born in Kalaki village of Ordubad region of Nakhchivan, on June 24, 1938. In January of 1975 he was arrested by the Azerbaijan State Security Committee due to his nationalist and anti soviet propaganda among students and was imprisoned as a political prisoner till July 17, 1976. Elchibay was one of the leaders of Azerbaijan Popular Movement when it started in 1988. He was the chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party till the end of his life, since it was founded (July 1989). On October 18, 1991 historical Act on the Independence of Azerbaijan was adopted thanks to the struggle of APFP. Abulfaz Elchibay was the first democratically elected president in Azerbaijan on June 7, 1992. He had significant services for democratization of Azerbaijan, strengthening of independence and improving well-being of people. In 1993 Elchibay was deposed from power and went back to his native village Kalaki, and continued his struggle there for 4 years and 4 months. Abulfaz Elchibay returning back to Baku on October 30, 1997 became the leader of opposition again. He was elected the chairman of the Democratic Congress. In November of the same year he founded Union of United Azerbaijan. Elchibay passed away at the age of 62 in Ankara city of Turkey on August 22, 2000.
