On July 7, Baku Court of Appeal held a preliminary hearing on the appeal filed by journalist and human rights defender Parviz Hashimli who was sentenced to 8 years in prison on gun smuggling charges. Judge Vagif Mursagulov presided over the hearing. The defense requested that the appeal court overturn the lower court's decision and acquit the journalist. The defense also petitioned changing the measure of restraint and summoning additional witnesses. However, according to lawyer Fariz Namazli, none of the requests was granted. Next hearing on the case is set for July 14. Tavakkul Gurbanov, who was sentenced as the journalist's alleged accomplice, has also filed an appeal against his sentence. Main Investigation Department of MNS launched a case against him with three articles of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code: Article 206.3.2 (smuggling of firearms on preliminary arrangement by an organized group), 228.2.1 (illegal purchase, transfer, selling, storage, transportation and carrying of firearms, their accessories, supplies and explosives by an organized group) and 228.2.2 (the same acts committed repeatedly).
